Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area. It is situated in

the northwest extremity of the North American continent, with Canada

to the east, the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the

west and south, with Russia further west across the Bering Strait.

Approximately half of Alaska's 698,473 residents live within the

Anchorage metropolitan area. As of 2009, Alaska remains the least

densely populated state of the U.S.

Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire in 1867, for $7.2 million

($113 million in today's dollars) at about two cents per acre ($4.74/km²).

The land went through several administrative changes before becoming

an organized territory in 1912, and the 49th state of the U.S. in 1959.

The name "Alaska" was already introduced in the Russian colonial

period, when it was used only for the peninsula and is derived from

the Aleut alaxsxaq, meaning "the mainland" or more literally, "the

object towards which the action of the sea is directed". It is also

known as Alyeska, the "great land", an Aleut word derived from the

same root.

Beqster first went to Alaska in 1989 aboard Costa Cruises’ “Daphne”. She was a small ship that carried 600 passengers. It was a brilliant experience and one of the hottest summers on record. Belle went for the first time with Princess Cruises and visited many of the same ports, including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Vancouver, Canada as a home port.

This trip really is worth while considering! Many people expect it to be cold, but

it really isn’t because the ships only visit in the summer months. And there is soooooo much to do. White water rafting, helicopter rides to glaciers, over the ice fields, water-planes landing on lakes in remote locations surrounded by wildlife, honey-glazed salmon barbecues, glacier hikes, gold-panning, huskies rides, and soooo much more. It’s brilliant, it’s amazing... it’s something everyone should do in their lifetime. We are confident you’ll be in awe of the magnificence of nature and here, you’ll really have an opportunity to participate and experience it all.
